Skill in critical appraisal has always been valued in our specialty because it is essential for the practice of evidence-based emergency medicine. The new series of six papers written by Steve Goodacre will therefore be welcomed by both trainees and trainers alike (see article on page 219). They provide a fresh, lucid and succinct description of the important aspects of this topic with the important points reinforced by examples from emergency medicine. The section covering evaluation of the service organisation and delivery is especially welcome as it is usually omitted from major texts. These papers provide a firm footing from which to practise evidence-based medicine and a welcome refresher for those who have been practising critical appraisal for some time.
In view of its importance, critical appraisal is assessed as part of the Colleges Fellowship of the College of Emergency Medicine (FCEM) examination. It is assumed, however, that
