A shortcut review was carried out to establish whether removable splints are better than plaster casts in reducing pain and promoting functional recovery in children with buckle fractures of the distal radius. A total of 1448 papers were found using the reported searches, of which two presented the best evidence to answer the clinical question. The author, date and country of publication, patient group studied, study type, relevant outcomes, results and study weaknesses of these best papers are tabulated. It is concluded that removable splints are preferable to plaster casts in these children.
In [a child with a buckle fracture of the distal radius] does [immobilisation in a plaster cast or symptomatic bracing] offer better [pain relief and functional recovery]?
