A long-term BET

It’s 10 years since the first BETs were published in this Journal.1 The realisation both surprised the BETs editorial team (hasn’t time flown?) and brought on feelings of ageing (where’s my hair?) and exhaustion (it’s been hard work!). When we first decided to systematise some of the poorer evidence in our specialty all that time ago, we set ourselves what seemed to be an impossibly aspirational target of completing 50 reviews to be called "BestBETs". As fig 1 shows, we seem to have overperformed somewhat and the website (www.bestbets.org) now has some 1600 BETs registered in one state or another—and the trend still seems to be one of exponential growth.

So what have we achieved apart from alopecia and fatigue? Well, in that first 10 years the Emergency Medical Journal (initially known as the Journal of Accident and Emergency Medicine) has published
