What are the highest priorities for research in prehospital care? Results of a review and consultation exercise

Background

A recent national review of ambulance services recommended that prehospital care research topics should be prioritised to ensure service provision and development are evidence based wherever possible and limited funds are targeted to most pressing need.


Study Objectives

To identify gaps in research evidence related to delivery of prehospital care; to rank topics in order of priority for research. The study was funded by the Department of Health.


Methods

Research priorities were initially identified by delegates at an AMBEX 2006 conference workshop. A review of research reviews in prehospital care identified other research evidence gaps. Recommendations in UK policy/guidance documents published since 2000 were matched to evidence. A topic list identified as evidence gaps was circulated in a Delphi-style three-round consultation to experts in prehospital care. Round: 1) confirm/add research gaps; 2) rank topics; 3) review scores with option to rescore. Scores were analysed using SPSS.
