Background
The 2007 NCEPOD report recommends the routine use of "top-to-toe" scanning in the adult trauma patient if no immediate indication for intervention exists. Personal communication with the Royal College of Radiologists reveals that no specific indications currently exist for "whole body" CT scanning (WBCT) following trauma. Clinical practice relies upon trauma team leader decision-making and specialist advice. Some institutions have presented protocols and supporting data for "whole body" scanning in trauma. However, there is a paucity of good evidence with which to inform best clinical practice. A short review of the available literature is presented.
Objective
The aim of our study was to explore the main issues regarding WBCT for blunt trauma as the first phase of a package of investigations with the aim of developing formal guidelines for best clinical practice. A
