Introduction
Problems with recruitment and retention of nursing staff in a busy urban ED required a novel approach to staffing the resuscitation. Operating department practitioners are valued members of the operating theatre team skilled in caring for high dependency patients, hence the new role of ED practitioner (EDP) was created.
Method
The Delphi process is an accepted research method to determine the extent to which a group agree on an issue. In the first stage, 35 questionnaires were sent out to ED and ITU consultants and ED nursing staff who had worked in the ED at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital before and after the introduction of EDPs.
