Blood component transfusion is a common procedure in emergency medicine applicable to a diverse range of presentations from obstetric haemorrhage to the medical causes of anaemia. The importance of a strong understanding of transfusion medicine is emphasised by recent developments in the management of massive haemorrhage and the disproportionately high rate of transfusion errors occurring in emergency departments.
Originally published in 1991, the ABC of Transfusion was a compendium of short articles from the BMJ written by subject experts. The newly issued 4th edition of this textbook has evolved into an excellent quick-reference resource and provides a timely update for emergency physicians aiming to keep abreast of this important field.
