Does the extension of primary care practice opening hours reduce the use of emergency services?
2016, Journal of Health EconomicsNonemergent emergency department visits under the National Health Insurance in Taiwan
2011, Health PolicyCitation Excerpt :In Europe, Lang et al. found that youth, birth outside of France, homelessness or precarious housing, lack of social support during illness and without health insurance were associated with NE ED use [10]. A Kuwait study has found higher education, social class, income level, and perceived urgency had significant, positive effects on NE ED utilization [11]. In the United States, which does not have universal health coverage, the choice to seek care at an ED is related to several factors including health insurance status, access to alternative health care providers, and perceived seriousness of condition [12,13].
ED patients: How nonurgent are they? Systematic review of the emergency medicine literature
2011, American Journal of Emergency MedicineCitation Excerpt :Among these extreme values, the 2 lowest (4.8% [53] and 9.7% [54]) were found on the analysis of diagnosis from a national database. Among the 3 highest, 2 (61% [46] and 90% [51]) were obtained only on the criterion of hospital admission, that is, all patients not hospitalized were considered as nonurgent cases [46,51], and one (82% [37]) was obtained from a list of complaints, including minor lacerations and minor contusions [37], which are not considered insults that can be treated by a general practitioner. If the proportion is recalculated by excluding these complaints, the proportion of nonurgent ED visits is lower (59%).
