AN EXCITING FIRST RESPONDER VEHICLE!

If you like prehospital medicine and motorcycles, then a study from Portugal may interest you. It reports the relative safety of a first responder motorcycle. Out of a total of 3626 calls, 12 motorcycle falls were registered, resulting in only three (non-fatal) injuries. The authors conclude that medical emergency motorcycles can be useful in urban areas if driven with acceptable levels of safety (Eur J Emerg Med 2008;15:40–2).

PATIENTS ARE STILL LEFT ON SPINAL BOARDS

A repeat audit of 100 emergency departments across the UK indicates that many patients are still being left routinely on spinal boards until radiological evidence provides clearance. Similarly, many patients are still being placed on spinal boards after their arrival at hospital even if they were not on one prehospital (Injury 2008;39:323–6).
