Background
Over two million people are diagnosed with diabetes in the UK; a figure predicted to rise to three million by the end of the decade. Diabetes is placing increasing pressure on NHS resources. Audit data from the Scottish Ambulance Service indicate hypoglycaemic patients account for approximately 50% of the 6500 diabetes related emergency calls per annum.
