The survey by Hutson et al1 of 393 academic emergency physicians demonstrated their almost universal sense that the police engage in excessive force. Although this result is provocative, it is not as informative as one might think. The opinions of such doctors would certainly be expected to carry great weight in discussions regarding healthcare issues.
