Fatal propofol overdose
A topical publication from Hungary in the Journal of Forensic and Legal Medicine reports the case of a middle aged woman who died after self-administration of propofol. The authors state that the abuse potential of propofol has not yet been completely defined and that little has been written about it. However, Sophia notes that this situation appears to be changing rapidly (Journal of Forensic and Legal Medicine 2009;16:287–9).
Major trauma and the military
Civilians have much to learn about major trauma from their military colleagues. That is the message from an article published in the British Journal of Surgery. The author argues that whereas the “average British surgeon” will have a limited experience of knife and firearm injuries, the military surgeon who has served in Iraq and/or Afghanistan is likely to have gained considerable experience in these fields. Latest protocols and innovations from the military practice are presented, including a brief review of haemostatic dressings used in the prehospital setting (Br J Surg 2009;96:831–2).
