A 44-year-old man was referred to our emergency department by his dental practitioner.

While chewing on a hamburger he noted severe pain in the right lower jaw, accompanied by a cracking sensation. A month previously he had undergone a difficult extraction of an unerupted impacted right mandibular third molar. He was otherwise in good general health.
