    Introduction

    Problems with recruitment and retention of nursing staff in a busy urban ED required a novel approach to staffing the resuscitation. Operating department practitioners are valued members of the operating theatre team skilled in caring for high dependency patients, hence the new role of ED practitioner (EDP) was created.
