    Background

    Venous thromboembolism (VTE) including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) is responsible for 32 000 deaths in hospitalised patients every year in the UK. Initial investigation of patients with suspected VTE recommends clinical probability score and D-dimer blood test.
