Drive-through emergency medicine may be the way of the future. Fearing an imminent influenza pandemic, emergency physicians looked at novel ways of potentially managing large numbers of infectious patients in already crowded emergency departments where isolation facilities are limited. Emergency physicians from Stanford have developed a ‘drive-through’ model where patients are triaged, examined and discharged in their vehicles in the parking lot of the hospital! This is also a potential strategy for other mass casualty incidents where isolation is required (Ann Emerg Med 2010;55:268–73).
