Everybody needs neighbours
A paper from the N Engl J Med (2012;367:1607–15) found that for persons who suffer an out of hospital cardiac arrest, the probability of receiving bystander-initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) may be influenced by neighbourhood characteristics. Data submitted from 29 US sites to the cardiac arrest registry during a 4 year period were analysed according to their neighbourhood characteristics. Among 14 225 patients with cardiac arrest, bystander-initiated CPR was provided to 4068 (28.6%), but those who had an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in low-income black neighbourhoods were less likely to receive bystander-initiated CPR than those in high-income white neighbourhoods.
Malpractice in Hong Kong
An article in Medl Educ (2012;46:1009–16) investigates the nature of medical malpractice in Hong Kong. It offers guidance for the inclusion of a curriculum to prevent medical misconduct. A comprehensive review of judgements made by the Medical Council of Hong Kong over a 2.5 year period was conducted. Of 40 cases, nearly half involved only one or two charges.
