Clinical introduction

An 11-year-old girl presented to the emergency department with a 3-day history of a painful, swollen right ring finger. There was no history of trauma or any predisposing conditions. Examination revealed swelling, with increased warmth, erythema and tenderness over the proximal phalanx.
