Did you know that WHO identifies personal violence as a global health issue? If not, hopefully, you do now.

Backed up by worldwide data that show interpersonal violence caused over 600 000 deaths and 17.2 million serious injuries in 2004 and in 2002 was the fifth and sixth most common cause of death in the 15–29- and the 30–44-year age groups, respectively, it is perfectly appropriate that WHO made this decision.

The fact that in England and Wales in 2008–2009 the police recorded more than 900 000 violent incidents means that it is a significant national issue; this will not be a surprise to any reader in the UK who is in the target audience of this journal.
