Straightening Out Chest Tubes: What Size, What Type, and When
2013, Clinics in Chest MedicineCitation Excerpt :The chest tube is left in the pleural space and the trocar withdrawn. Although technically simple, this “harpoon” technique has a high risk of complications, mainly because of the danger of impaling the lung or surrounding organs.3,13–15 Hence, in the authors’ opinion, these tubes are not recommended for routine use.
Pleural decompression and drainage during trauma reception and resuscitation
2008, InjuryCitation Excerpt :Digital decompression of the pleural space identifies that no adhesions are present and will cause the lung to fall away. The use of a large chest tube 28Fr or greater will also decrease the likelihood of intrapleural insertion.27 Blunt dissection and insertion of a finger with 360° rotation is a pre-requisite of all tube thoracostomies.
Emergency chest tube placement in trauma care-Which approach is preferable?
2007, ResuscitationCitation Excerpt :There are a number of reports of major complications as a consequence of both approaches: For the lateral approach, injury to an intercostal artery,14 perforation of a lung,15 perforation of the right atrium,16,17 of the right or left ventricle,18–20 stenosis of the subclavian artery,21 injury to the inferior vena cava,22 Horner's syndrome,23 and intraabdominal malposition24,25 have been reported. For the ventral approach injury to the heart,16,26 to the oesophagus,11 mediastinum,11,27 induction of a contralateral pneumothorax,27 injury to the phrenic nerve,11 and an arteriovenous fistula28 have been described.
