Traumatic rupture of the thoracic aorta

Ann Emerg Med. 1980 Sep;9(9):483-6. doi: 10.1016/s0196-0644(80)80309-x.

Abstract

Traumatic rupture of the thoracic aorta is found in 10% to 15% of fatal automobile accidents. Ten to twenty percent of patients initially survive the injury and are seen in the emergency department. A high index of suspicion from history and physical examination and liberal use of aortography are key in diagnosis.
